Resource officer uses Taser on special needs student at Volusia County high school

16-year-old was acting out in class at Spruce Creek High, officials say

PORT ORANGE, Fla. -

A special needs student was Tased by a school resource officer at a Volusia County high school, according to deputies.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. Friday at Spruce Creek High School.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the 16-year-old student was acting out in class, throwing objects and being disruptive.

Two school administrators tried to calm him down, but the teen started pushing them, deputies said.

The school resource officer was then called in to help, and she also tried to help, but the boy continued to resist, according to the Sheriff's Office, which said she used her stun gun to restrain him.

The teen was finally secured by the officer.

No other details have been released.

Students say they're surprised to hear of the incident at their school.

"I was really surprised because nothing really happens like that around our school," said student JC Sylvester.
