'Rocky' to become musical on Broadway
Stallone 'proud,' 'excited' for musical
Rocky Balboa overcame the odds to earn a championship match with Apollo Creed. In February 2014, he'll take on his next challenge -- Broadway.
Rocky features a book by Sylvester Stallone, the man who wrote and starred in the iconic sports movie in 1976. Tony award winner Thomas Meehan, the writer behind Annie, The Producers and Hairspray will co-write the book with Stallone.
The musical's original score comes from Tony award winners Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and will be directed by Alex Timbers.

Rocky debuted in Hamburg, Germany in 2012. The Broadway musical will play at the Winter Garden Theatre -- the current home for the musical Mamma Mia!
Stallone, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the original movie, is looking forward to seeing his underdog tale on Broadway.
"I couldn't be more proud or more excited about this production and how my original story of Rocky Balboa has been brought to spectacular life onstage," Stallone said in a statement.
"The entire creative team has...made [the] story as exciting, heartbreaking and inspiring as it was when Rocky first went the distance on screen."
