ORLANDO, Fla. - A local ROTC student was honored by the Navy Thursday after he saved a woman from drowning during an obstacle race in Georgia.
16-year-old Ciro Canalis was running in the Spartan Obstacle Race in Georgia earlier this month when he found a woman in a water pit screaming for help. When he reached the woman, she having trouble breathing.
"I didn't know if this woman was going to die in my hands. I was very scared very scared," Canalis said.
While others ran for help, Canalis immediately began performing CPR on the woman, which he had only learned to do in class at Cypress Creek High School the day before.
For his actions, the Navy granted him the Meritorious Achievement Award.
"It means a lot to know I did something that most people would brush off and I got to realize I did something really good," Canalis said.
