MELBOURNE, Fla. - Now that Brevard's largest outdoor music festival has wrapped up for the year, organizers were looking to relax. That is, until they noticed their signs disappearing.
A plea posted Tuesday on Runaway Country's Facebook page generated a lot of shares, likes and comments: "PLEASE SHARE!!!! Whoever is stealing the RC street signs with artist photos, NOT cool. These were to be donated to various Brevard County charities to raise money at auction. Anyone who finds one please bring to Wickham Park, no questions asked. Thank you!"
The signs posted across Brevard featured photos of The Band Perry, Toby Keith, Joe Nichols and Keith Urban, to name a few. On a sign on State Road A1A at Eau Gallie Boulevard, the image of singer Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry has been cut out, leaving her band mates Reid and Neil Perry flanking a white blob, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
The festival headcount was about 35,000 people, executive producer Gary McCann said.
"The signs that we produce advertise the artists who are coming to Runaway Country. They're not cheap to produce. However, we found they are a really cool option for auction to charity. Who wouldn't want a picture of Keith Urban over their mantel?" he said.
Most are 4-feet-by-8-feet, and some with yellow frames were donated by the county's property appraiser Dana Blickley. McCann declined to say how many were taken. He estimated 40 signs were put up across Brevard.
"People have come to like them (because they have) real street cred," McCann said. "Some might have a hole in them or have some bird poop on them."
To drum up excitement for Runaway Country each year, organizers host pre-party events with raffles and entertainment. Proceeds from those typically go to children's research or the Humane Society. McCann said the festival gets hundreds of requests to help local charities.
"Some (signs) may bring in $100," he said. "Some $1,000. We'll continue to search for the rest. Hopefully whoever has one will have a change of heart."
