SANFORD, Fla. – A man was shot trying to save a Seminole County homeowner from three gunmen, police said.

Sanford police said they responded early Wednesday morning to a home invasion call in the 1100 block of Willow Avenue.

Authorities said a person inside the home was on the phone when three men tried to break in.  The homeowner told the person on the other end of the line about the incident, and the man rushed to the home in an effort to protect the homeowner, police said.

When the victim got to the home, he was shot by one of the gunmen, authorities said.

The three assailants got away before police could arrive.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition.
