Sanford police host 'Walk and Talk' to help repair department image
Event to be hosted in historic Goldsboro Neighborhood
The Sanford Police Department is still trying to repair its image after being heavily criticized for how it handled the Trayvon Martin shooting investigation.
The department is hosting its first "Walk and Talk" event in the Historic Goldsboro Neighborhood between 8th Street and 12th Street and Pecan and Mulberry Avenues.
Chief Cecil Smith took over the department after the city manager let former Chief Bill Lee go. Smith says the "Walk Talk" is designed to increase interaction and communication between the residents of the city and the Police Department.
"It's important that our officers and community groups are working in partnership to create safe communities. A part of that starts with us being in the community, talking to the community and working together on issues within the community, " Smith said.
Members from local community groups and churches, will take part in the community walk.
Although this first event is taking place in Goldsboro, all of the neighborhoods in the city will eventually be included.
The event starts at 4 p.m. Watch Local 6 for a full report.
