ORLANDO, Fla. -

A sanitation worker was run over by his garbage truck and killed early Friday in Orlando, according to police.

Brandon Bristol, 26, a city of Orlando waste management employee, was killed in the incident, which happened around 5 a.m. at Cottage Hill Road and Fitzgerald Drive, just south of State Road 408.

According to Orlando police, initial information from an investigation shows that Bristol was on the back of the garbage truck and was struck and killed by the vehicle at some point during the route.

The 48-year-old driver of the truck realized that Bristol wasn't on the vehicle and returned to their previous location, finding his co-worker dead in the parking lot of a church, police said.

A police investigation is ongoing.

No other details were released.
