SANFORD, Fla. – The Seminole County School Board has voted to put a penny tax increase on the ballot.
If approved by voters in May, the 1-cent sales tax would generate more than $158 million in 10 years for Seminole County public schools.
That money is set to go toward projects like renovating cafeterias and classrooms, and replacing roofs at more than a dozen schools, according to a "wish list" that was voted on by school board members Tuesday night.
In addition to approving a "wish list" of improvement projects that would be funded by the sales tax money, if voters approve it in May, the school board also voted to reduce the amount of the Seminole County Public School millage rate levy if the sales tax is approved.
According to the list, a big chunk of the money, over $17 million, would go to Seminole High School, replacing 22 portables with classrooms, and at Pine Crest Elementary School, more than $15 million would go to replacing the administration and cafeteria buildings -- built in the 1950s.
The plan also sets aside just under $1 million to refurbish stadiums at Lyman, Lake Howell and Lake Mary high schools.
