Seminole County voters to decide on 1 cent sales tax increase

Officials could raise $63 million annually

SANFORD, Fla. – Seminole County voters have five days to decide if they'll support a one cent sales tax increase that county officials say could raise $63 million yearly.

According to county leaders, the revenue created would go toward public infrastructure within the county and its seven cities. A quarter of the projected $637 million for the 10-year duration of the tax hike would go to Seminole County Public Schools.

Voters have the chance on Tuesday to say yes or no to the tax increase at a special election. If passed, it would raise the county's sales tax from 6 cents to 7 cents on each dollar.

If voters approve the tax, it would take effect on January 1.

Voters approved a penny sales tax in 1991 and again in 2001, but county leaders didn't put it back on the ballot after it expired in 2011.

Officials say the tax passed in 2001 built 100 miles of roads, two schools, 75 miles of sidewalks and improved 30 intersections throughout the county.
