Seminole school hosts benefit for student battling cancer

More than $3,000 raised for Grayson Zrelak

LAKE MARY, Fla. – More than 150 Seminole Science Charter School students danced, sang and played games Friday night during a charity event to benefit one of their classmates who is battling a rare form of cancer.

“Kids Night Out for Grayson” was set up in honor of 12-year-old Grayson Zrelak, who is preparing to receive a stem cell transplant this week once he finishes his most recent round of chemotherapy. More than $3,000 was raised during the charity event.

"Thank you guys so much for coming to my fundraiser," Grayson said in a video. "It really means a lot to me and my family ... I wish I could be there."

Grayson's twin sister, Avery, is also a student at the school and both siblings are part of the school's First Lego League.

Grayson was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in February 2015 and since then, he's undergone numerous hospitalizations, surgeries and treatments. Hodgkins lymphoma affects the immune system, making it difficult for Grayson to fight infections.

Grayson's mother, Michelle Zrelak, who is a breast cancer survivor, set up a website detailing her son's journey during the past two years. Anyone wishing to donate to help cover the boy's medical bills can visit helpgrayson.myevent.com.

A chart is also available below showing the prices of medicines commonly used to treat the disease.
