ORLANDO, Fla. -

In the wake of the suicide of a 12-year-old girl, Florida U.S. Senator Bill Nelson is calling on Congress to pass a new federal crackdown on cyber-bullying.

Thursday, Nelson called on members of a key Senate committee to pass new cyber-bullying legislation that's currently stalled as part of a larger bill.

The new rules would require schools to address all forms of bullying, including on social media websites. It would also require schools to notify parents of any incidents so they can be dealt with and ended quickly.

The call for action comes after the September 9th suicide of 12-year-old Rebecca Ann Sedwick in Lakeland. Deputies say the girl had been bullied for over a year and a half by at least 15 girls. The Polk County Sheriff's Office is now investigating whether criminal charges can be filed in the girl's death.
