Several Lake County courtesy busing routes reinstated

21 additional routes under review, board member says

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Parents in Lake County have been notified that several of the courtesy busing routes that were canceled at the beginning of the school year will be running again.

Parents were protesting the cancellation because their children would have to cross busy intersections in order to get to school.

Board members say they worked with the county to research five routes and found the number of cars on roads is high enough to qualify as a hazardous condition under the state's rules.

"The take away is we did not execute the transportation changes effectively," said board member Tod Howard. "Ultimately, I believe we did not allow enough time for a change of this magnitude."

Howard says there are about 21 additional routes under review and there will be a special meeting next week to talk about different funding options for routes that aren't considered hazardous.
