NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A 23-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark Thursday off New Smyrna Beach, officials said.

Shane Nolet, of Edgewater, was bitten on his hand while surfing near the jetty, a common area for shark bites.

Nolet suffered a 1-inch cut and several scratches, beach officials said.

A friend who was surfing with Nolet said he noticed a 3-foot shark in the area after a school of bait fish swam nearby.
