Shellie Zimmerman injured in DUI crash in Winter Park

Wife of George Zimmerman recently filed for divorce

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The estranged wife of George Zimmerman was taken to a hospital after her vehicle was struck by a driver suspected of DUI, according to Winter Park police.

Shellie Zimmerman was taken to Winter Park Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash, which occurred at 11:14 a.m. Friday near Aloma and Phelps Avenues.

Police said the man who caused the crash did not know who he injured, until officers told him it was Shellie Zimmerman.

Winter Park police said Zimmerman suffered abrasions from the air bag and complained of a foot injury. A passenger in Zimmerman's car,  Andrea Timko, described as a female friend, was also taken to the hospital.

Winter Park police said both vehicles sustained serious damage and both had to be towed from the scene.

The driver of the other car, Nicholas Austin, 31, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and given a citation for the crash. Police said Austin ran the red light at the intersection and crashed into Zimmerman's vehicle as she was making a left-hand turn.

The police report said investigators found unopened bottles of beer throughout Austin's car and he was "off balance and had difficulty speaking clearly," although he told police he only "drank one beer today while at work."

Shellie Zimmerman filed for divorce from her husband earlier this year.

George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder over the summer in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
