SANFORD, Fla. – Shellie Zimmerman on Wednesday pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor perjury charge in a deal carrying a sentence of one year of probation.
Shellie Zimmerman pleaded guilty to lying to Judge Kenneth Lester about finances involving her and her husband, George Zimmerman, during a bond hearing last year.

As part of the plea deal, Shellie Zimmerman must complete 100 hours of community service and write an apology letter to Lester. If she completes it all, the judge will withhold adjudication, meaning she will not have a conviction on her record and she will be able to continue with her nursing career.
Prosecutors last year discovered recorded telephone calls from the Seminole County jail between Shellie and George Zimmerman where they talked in code while discussing moving around more than $100,000 that had been donated by online supporters. Days after the phone call, she testified via teleconference that she and her husband were broke.
In her letter to Lester, she took responsibility for lying and that over the past 16 months she has learned a lot about the justice system and the importance of telling the truth. Shellie Zimmerman also thanked Special Prosecutor Angela Corey for allowing her to enter into the plea deal.
Her attorney says that at the time, Shellie Zimmerman didn't know to whom that donated money technically belonged.
Shellie Zimmerman was in court on Wednesday as she agreed with the facts Assistant State Attorney John Guy listed and confirmed she understood the plea. Judge Marlene Alva accepted the plea. Her husband, George, was not in court.
Shellie Zimmerman could have faced up to 5 years in prison for a felony perjury charge.
George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder earlier this year in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
