Deputies search for man, woman

ORLOVISTA, Fla. – A man was shot dead Friday morning outside an Orange County medical facility, deputies said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Gregory Whitbeck, 55, died in the shooting, which was reported about 6:50 a.m. at 5600 W. Colonial Drive near Kirkman Road, a facility that houses a dialysis center.

Deputies said they were called to the area and found Whitbeck suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died, deputies said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, witnesses said a man and woman approached Whitbeck in the parking lot as he was walking toward the medical center and shot him. The man and woman then fled the area, deputies said.

The victim was an employee at the Fresenius Medical Care West Orlando Dialysis clinic, the company that owns the center said in a statement.

Whitbeck was a registered clinical social worker intern, according to the Department of Health website.

“We are deeply saddened to report that an employee who worked at our West Orlando dialysis clinic was shot this morning outside of the facility and passed away at Health Central Hospital,” Jon Stone, Fresenius Medical Care spokesperson said. “Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased and to our employees who worked with the individual.”

Stone said the facility will divert patients of the dialysis center to nearby facilities and are making grief counselors available to patients and employees.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts or identity of the man and woman are asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS or the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

An investigation is ongoing.
