Slain Brevard County deputy to be honored in Washington DC memorial

Deputy Barbara Pill's family travels to National Police Week

The nation will honor on Monday the Brevard County deputy who was killed in the line of duty last year at the National Police Week in Washington D.C.

Deputy Barbara Pill, 52, was shot and killed during a Melbourne traffic stop in 2012. She will be honored at a vigil on Monday night as more than 20 Brevard County Sheriff's Office employees and her family look on.

National Police Week is dedicated to honoring the average 160 officers killed in the line of duty each year. There are more than 19,000 names engraved on the dual panels that stretch 304 feet long; 321 names are new this year.

14 Brevard County officers are also listed on the memorial wall near the Capitol building.
