Clifford Long
MELBOURNE, Fla. -

The smell of marijuana at a Melbourne apartment complex Saturday morning led to a foot chase and the arrest of a man police said was carrying drugs and a loaded firearm.

Melbourne police officers said that during a foot patrol at the Shull Manor apartment complex at about 3 a.m., they smelled marijuana and noticed Clifford Long in the parking lot. When Long saw the officers, he ran, police said.

During the pursuit, Long pulled a .45 caliber handgun from beneath his shirt, turned toward the pursuing officers but tripped over a curb, dropping the gun as he fell, police said.

Officers said they found marijuana, a baggie containing cocaine residue and about a gram of methamphetamine in Long's possession when they searched him.

Long was arrested and transported to Brevard County Jail.
