Smoke in baggage area at Orlando International Airport investigated

Spirit Airlines baggage claim relocated after baggage belt smolders

ORLANDO, Fla. – All operations are back to normal Wednesday night after some customers at Orlando International Airport were rerouted to a different baggage carousel after a baggage belt started smoldering on Wednesday afternoon.

OIA officials said smoke was reported in the area Spirit Airlines ticket counter in Terminal B after baggage belt carousel 23 started smoldering.

People were moved out of the area while the baggage belt was checked out for about 25 minutes and no active fire was burning, officials said.

OIA is fully operational, officials say, and airport operations were not impacted.

Wednesday's incident marks the second problem at an OIA baggage belt this month. Smoke filled the airport earlier in August after an incident, causing debris to fall to the ground.

Airport workers say after Wednesday's incident they are inspecting much of the 7 miles of conveyor belt.
