SpaceX says it's heading to Mars

Company tweets mission could begin as early as 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. – SpaceX announced Wednesday that it will send a spacecraft to Mars as soon as 2018.

"Planning to send Dragon to Mars as soon as 2018," SpaceX tweeted. "Red Dragons will inform overall Mars architecture, details to come."

No other details were immediately released.

SpaceX made history earlier this month when it successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral and landed the first stage of the rocket on an ocean barge off Florida's coast.

SpaceX employees gathered around the company's Mission Control in Hawthorne, California, cheered wildly and chanted "USA" after the booster touched down. Previous barge attempts had failed.
