Sparks fly in school bus crash caught on tape

FHP says driver ran red light, crashed into power pole

CASSELBERRY, Fla. – Local 6 obtained dramatic video on Thursday showing the second crash a Seminole County bus driver caused, all with students on the bus.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said driver 66-year-old Jack Timmel ran a red light on Red Bug Lake Road and sideswiped another car, then crashed into a power pole earlier this month.

In the video, all six of the children are strapped in when the accident occurred, but one adult who was sitting in the midsection of the bus was ejected from the seat and into the center aisle.

"When bus hit, his backpack ended up in the drivers seat," said Candy Davis, whose son was on the bus.

Timmel, who's been with Seminole County since 2008, was involved in a similar crash in January, according to troopers, who said Timmel told them after the accident that he thought the light was green.  There were minor injuries associated with the wreck. The district said Timmel was forced to take classroom and driving classes.

Timmel has since resigned from his position.
