Police distribute masks to St. Cloud residents affected by brush fire

Smoke, wind expected to continue in coming days, police say

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – The St. Cloud Police Department was distributing masks to residents affected by a brush fire in the area.

As smoke and wind are expected to continue in the area throughout the next few days, police said masks would be available to anyone in need.

Police said masks could be picked up at the police station from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, but officers ended the distribution around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The station is at 4700 Neptune Road.

Police also asked residents to remember that their pets also can be affected by smoke and their exposure to it should be limited.

The 36-acre brush fire was caused by a downed power line Thursday and prompted the evacuation of St. Cloud Elementary School, police said.

The St. Cloud Fire Department continues to work and monitor the brush fire. Police said the fire has encompassed 53 acres and is 100 percent contained.

Crews were able to significantly reduce the smoke in the area over the last 12 hours, police said.

Budinger Avenue will remain closed from Nolte Road to 17th Street for the remainder of the weekend as crews continue to work, police said.
