HOLIDAY, Fla. - A strong odor coming from a nearby home prompted a neighbor to call authorities. It turned out someone had abandoned 40 animals inside the Pasco County home.

Sheriff's deputies found dogs, cats, rabbits, a snake and a lizard inside the Holiday home on Wednesday evening. There were flies swarming around the windows.

The Tampa Bay Times reports the animals appeared to have been left inside the home for up to a week. Animal feces was scattered throughout the home.

As animal control officers worked late into the night to remove the emaciated animals, investigators were trying to find out who last lived in the house.

An investigation continues.
