Stetson University sets 1st football game date since 1956

DeLAND, Fla. – Stetson University will kick off its first football game on August 31 since 1956.

Stetson joined the Pioneer Football League, which is comprised of private universities, after expressing interest of starting a non-scholarship football program in 2009.

On-campus committees say the addition of the sport would help meet Stetson's goal of enrolling 3,000 DeLand campus undergraduates by 2016 and help attract out-of-state students.

Mercer University joined Stetson when it was voted in as the newest members of NCAA Division 1 non-scholarship football league.

Stetson hired former Princeton head coach Roger Hughes to coach the Hatters. The game will be held on Aug. 31, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Spec Martin stadium in DeLand against Warner University.
