Storms turn severe Sunday afternoon; Daytona 500 delayed

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Volusia County. Radar indicated strong rotation as the storm raced to the east at 35 mph.

Additional tornado warnings were issued for coastal Volusia County, including the Speedway, where the grandstands were evacuated and racing was stopped.

As of 3:44 p.m. all tornado warnings were cancelled, but severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Volusia, Orange, Lake and Seminole counties until 4:30 p.m.

The safest place to be if a tornado warning is issued for your area is on the lowest level of a strong building, in an interior room away from windows.
