Stray bullet shoots through woman's home in Volusia County

No word where the bullet came from

ORANGE CITY, Fla. – Jackie Edwards, 70, was at home around 10:30 Sunday night, enjoying her night in with "NCIS" and a cup of a coffee, when a stray bullet shot through her kitchen, missing her by just a few feet.

"It came through here," Edwards said as she pointed to her shattered kitchen window and torn hole in the screen. "Then I had a vase sitting right here from Turkey. It was sitting right here and the bullet came this way. I kid you not, there was glass everywhere."

The bullet shattered the vase and landed in a back room. Edwards hit the floor in horror, crawling to her cellphone to call 911.

"I didn't know what was happening," she said. "I didn't know if there was going to be another bullet."

Edwards lost her breath retelling the story Monday night, less than 24 hours later.

"My little heart is going pitter-patter, pitter-patter," she said.

What didn't help was during the interview with News 6, she heard what sounded like 10 gunshots.

"This happens all the time," Edwards added.

Volusia County deputies found the bullet only 5 feet from where Edwards was sitting on the couch. They also found several more shell casings on the street, according to an incident report. It shows a neighbor saw an SUV drive away right after the shots were fired. Edwards said deputies told her they believe it was random.

"It was a close call. That's what scares me," she said. "That's exactly where I stand to prepare dishes and make food and make coffee. I would have been dead on the floor."

Edwards is still here to give a message to whoever pulled the trigger: "Just because you have a gun doesn't mean you have the intelligence to use it responsibly."
