Sumter teen accused in school shooting plot will remain in custody

Zachary Shearon, 13, remains in custody at Marion County Detention Center

OCALA, Fla. – A teen who is accused of trying to plot a Columbine-style attack at The Villages Charter Middle School in January appeared before a judge Thursday and will remain in custody, according to the State Attorney's Office.

It was 13-year-old Zachary Shearon's second appearance before a judge to determine if he will stay in custody at the Marion County Detention Center.

A judge ruled on Monday that Shearon should remain in the center.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office learned of the plot after a student overheard Shearon saying that he was going to shoot up the school's gym and told students to not to come to school on Jan. 27.

When Shearon was questioned by a school resource officer and the principal, he told them that he "made a dumb statement."

Shearon disclosed his idea to his friend Richard Hummer,14, who was also arrested.

Hummer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge earlier this week.
