The National Football League announced Wednesday the Super Bowl 50 logo will not have Roman numerals--a tradition since 1971, ESPN reported.
The tradition will be broken for only one year because the letter "L," which would be used to represent the number 50, is not appealing to the eye, Jamie Weston, the league's vice president of brand and creative, told ESPN.

Weston said the logo design team tried 73 different versions with the Roman numeral before concluding it would not work.
The NFL will return to Roman numerals for Super Bowl LI, scheduled for February 2017.
Super Bowl 50 is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2016 at Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. You can tune in to CBS for full-game coverage.
