Taser, BB gun found in boy's locker at Lake Co. middle school, deputies say

Boy told deputies he planned to go hunting after school

GROVELAND, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy was arrested Thursday afternoon after he brought a BB gun to school, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.

A spokesperson from the Sheriff's Office said they were notified by the assistant principal of Gray Middle School about a boy who possibly had a Taser in his locker.

The discovery was made Thursday, and parents are just now finding out about what happened.

"It's very disturbing, absolutely disturbing, because I obviously have a young one in school," said parent Felicia Brenya.

The boy admitted to deputies and his assistant principal that he brought a BB gun and Taser to school because he "planned on going hunting after school with his friends," according to the incident report.

"I understand some people going hunting and stuff like that. If you're in that kind of family environment, those weapons should be kept separate. I don't believe none of it," Brenya said.

Officials said they found the gun and Taser in the boy's backpack inside his locker. They credited another student for speaking up when he saw something wasn't right.

"We applaud that student and encourage others to do the same," Lake County Schools communications officer Sherri Owens said. "When they see something, they should say something."

The boy is now facing two counts of possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Parents were notified of the situation via an automated message.
