Taxi cab driver leads Altamonte Springs police to woman after crash

Car reportedly stolen from Spring Colony Apartments

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – A cab driver led Altamonte Springs police to a woman who was believed to have been dead after she allegedly crashed a stolen car.

Police said they received a report of a stolen car from the Spring Colony Apartments early Wednesday, and an officer tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver took off.  The car was found crashed a short time later on State Road 436 near Bear Lake Road, but the driver was nowhere to be found, police said.

According to Altamonte Springs police, the damage to the car was so severe that officers thought the woman driving had either been ejected or was possibly dead.

Police later learned, however, that she escaped the wreckage and went to the parking lot of a Wells Fargo bank located about a half mile east of the crash site.

A taxi cab then arrived at the crash scene looking to pick up a woman who had called for a ride, according to police, who followed the cabbie to the woman.

The woman was taken into custody before being transported to a hospital because of her injuries.  Her condition was not released.

She faces charges of stealing a vehicle and fleeing from police.
