A 17-year-old accused of shooting a classmate at their Winter Garden high school was charged as an adult on Thursday and booked into the Orange County Jail.
Jmorian Bell faces several felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm on school property, in the December 4 shooting of Ja'Roderick Smith at West Orange High School.
Bell, who turns 18 in March, was previously being held in a juvenile detention facility.
“The family of Ja’Roderick Smith, my 15-year-old client, has confidence in State Attorney Jeff Ashton’s decision to try the shooter of a child on public school grounds as an adult,” said Gary Siplin, the attorney representing Smith's family.
Smith was shot in the face and abdomen and spent several days in the hospital.
