Teen dies in mom's murder-suicide attempt, Oviedo police say

Cops: Mother in serious condition after killing daughter, shooting herself

OVIEDO, Fla. – Police continue to investigate an attempted murder-suicide in Oviedo, where they say a mother shot and killed her 17-year-old daughter before turning the gun on herself.

According to Oviedo police, officials received a call around 7:20 a.m. Monday to a home on Farmingham Court in the Waverlee Woods subdivision and found 44-year-old Sujatha Guduru and 17-year-old Chetana Guduru suffering from gunshot wounds.

Chetana, an International Baccalaureate student at Seminole High School, died at Orlando Regional Medical Center just before 9:30 a.m., police said.

Sujatha Guduru had sent her brother an email about wanting to harm herself and her daughter at 5:45 a.m., police said. When her brother, Prasad Chittaluru, went to check on them, he found them in the master bedroom and called police.

As of Tuesday, Sujatha Guduru was in stable condition, police said. The grandmother of the teen was in the home at the time of the shooting, but was sleeping and didn't hear anything, police said.

Oviedo Mayor Dominic Persampiere posted on Facebook that police were investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

"Apparent murder / suicide in waverlee woods this morning, Oviedo PD and FD working the scene. News trucks expected shortly," Persampiere posted.

Neighbors told Local 6 they saw the mother and daughter jogging together on Sunday.

Grief counselors were available at Seminole High School, officials said, and students were asked to wear purple -- Chetana's favorite color -- on Friday.

"Thoughts and prayers to all of Nole Nation on today's tragic loss," SCPS said in a tweet.

No other details, including the motive, have been released.
