Teen shot in thwarted Volusia home invasion

15-year-old taken to hospital after Orange City shooting

ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A 15-year-old boy was shot early Thursday during a thwarted home invasion in Volusia County, according to deputies.

The shooting occurred around 12:01 a.m. at a house on 19th Street in Orange City, west of U.S. Highway 17-92.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, deputies found the teen lying on his back bleeding from a gunshot wound just below his right knee.

The teen's father told deputies that he had just returned home when two men wearing dark clothing and ski masks attacked him as he was walking to the front door.  According to deputies, the man said the culprits tried to force their way into the house, but he fought back and was beaten and pistol-whipped.

Deputies said when the teen heard the commotion and ran outside to help his father, he was shot in the leg.

The assailants then ran off, deputies said..

The teen was taken by ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.  The father was treated at the scene and refused to be taken to a hospital, deputies said.

Laurie Ashley, 43, who was inside the home during the attack, was arrested when it was learned that she had an open warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of retail theft.

An investigation is ongoing, but the incident doesn't appear to have been a random act, deputies said.
