Teen threatened boy, 12, with loaded spearfishing gun, Volusia deputies say

18-year-old charged with child abuse after stepfather reports incident

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – An 18-year-old was arrested on child abuse charges after Volusia County deputies say he threatened a 12-year-old boy with a loaded spearfishing gun.

The stepfather of Joshua Rinto told deputies that Rinto went into the 12-year-old's bedroom with the spear gun and pointed it at the child's face when the door opened.

The boy then ran into the closet to hid from Rinto, deputies said, when Rinto followed him and made comments about "poking" him with the spear's tip. Rinto also said the spear would go easily through the closet door.

Rinto told deputies he never had any intentions of harming the boy and that he was only "showing him" the spear gun.

Rinto was taken to the Volusia County jail on no bond.
