Teenager hit by truck home, recovering

Jocelyn Diehl, 14, struck in incident

ORLANDO, Fla. – If you took a quick glance at 14-year-old Jocelyn Diehl, you would hardly be able to tell she was hit by a truck just last week.

"When the truck was coming at me, I thought I was going to die," Jocelyn said.

Travis Johnson, 19, hit Jocelyn in a truck that was reported stolen. After hitting her along Dean Road on Feb. 14, he ran into some nearby woods before an Orange County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit apprehended him, troopers said.

Jocelyn doesn't remember every detail of the accident, but she does remember the sound leading up to it.

"As we were walking, I heard this car speeding and then so I turned around and looked at it. And then me and my friend, we turned around and then we see it and it's coming at us," Jocelyn said. "So I start running to try to get out of the way and then it hits me and I slam into the wall."

Jocelyn's mom, Kristina Kiczula, got the call while at work. The first words her mom heard on the other end of the phone were her daughter had been hit by a car.

"I was like, 'Oh no, I can't take another hit.' We were in the ICU for like two months with her," Kiczula said.

Just three years ago, Jocelyn had to have brain surgery. If she got too stressed or had high blood pressure, it could cause a brain bleed.

"I don't understand it. My little one said, 'I don't know how you're alive.' I said, 'I don't know either,'" Kiczula said.

Jocelyn's vision has been blurry post-accident, she has a concussion and fractures in her face. But she didn't break any bones and just Tuesday she went back to school. Her mom said it's been tough, but they're handling it the best way they know how.

"We kind of work through our issues with like, you know, jokes. We said, 'Well, she only has seven lives left,'" Kiczula said.

Kiczula said it's still hard to look at the spot where her daughter was hit. It's unknown how many doctors, including specialists, Jocelyn will have to see.

Kiczula is a single parent raising three children. Her brother set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. Anyone who would like to help can click here.
