WASHINGTON, DC – Whirlpool is recalling thousands of microwaves because of a defect that can cause them to catch fire.
The company internal arcing during use can ignite a plastic component inside some of the microwave hood combinations.

Whirlpool says it has received five reports of incidents, including one home fire, two fires involving the surrounding cabinets, one report of smoke, and one report of a burning odor, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The microwaves were sold at Best Buy, HH Gregg, Lowes, Sears and other home improvement and retail stores from January 2014 through April 2016 for between $370 and $470.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled microwaves, unplug the units and contact Whirlpool at 800-990-6254 for a free replacement product.
