SANFORD, Fla. - A 74-year-old landlord was arrested on suspicion of attacking a Sanford business owner with a sledgehammer and trying to run him over with a pickup truck.
Issam Hatoum, 75, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery on a person over the age of 65 and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
According to a Sanford police report, a business owner Omar Elsayed called authorities on Monday saying that Hatoum, his landlord, had attacked him last week and he wanted to show officers surveillance video.
The man also said he was scared because Hatoum had returned to the plaza, deputies said.
Sanford police said the video shows Hatoum attempting to hit the man three times while driving a pickup truck.
Police said Hatoum then grabbed what appeared to be a sledgehammer and hit the man twice in the midsection and once in the arm.
Bruised over his abdomen and suffering from an arm injury, Elsayed told Local 6 he wondered why it happened.
"I don't believe it," said Elsayed. "I don't sleep. I don't believe people kill people like this. Over money?"
An officer located Hatoum in the plaza and questioned him about the incident, and he said, "Yes, I did have a fight with him, but he started it," an arrest report stated.
Hatoum was arrested and taken to jail.
The victim was not seriously injured.
