Tools stolen from Habitat for Humanity home in Sanford

Police say burglar stole almost $2,000 worth of batteries, saws, drills

SANFORD, Fla. – A thief cleaned out all the tools from inside a Habitat for Humanity home in Sanford, and now police are searching for a suspect.

Police said the burglar stole almost $2,000 worth of batteries, saws and drills overnight Tuesday.

"It's awful and scary to know it happened right next door," said Glenda Blake. "I'll definitely be double checking the locks."

Neighbors on Country Club Circle said they can't believe someone would steal from a Habitat for Humanity home.

"That's so sad, that's so sad for someone to break in like that," said Carolyn Boatwright.

James Piatt, a carpenter, told Local 6 one of his tools went missing overnight, too.

"I left it out by mistake. I got up this morning and it was gone," said Piatt.

Piatt said he empathizes with what happened up the street from him.

"It's probably going stop the job for a day or two," he said. "Can't work without tools."

Habitat for Humanity is hoping to have a single mother and her children move in by Christmas, but with the tools missing, it's not clear if it'll happen.

Sanford police said all the tools had the phone number and initials for Habitat for Humanity on them, so they hope it will stop pawn shops from buying them.
