'Treasure Hunt' database shows unclaimed property accounts

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – To find out if you have unclaimed accounts including real estate, jewelry and other assets, you have to go on a treasure hunt.

As part of an October 2012 settlement with American International Group related to unclaimed life insurance benefits, 61,271 new unclaimed property accounts worth more than $25 million have been received by the state Bureau of Unclaimed Property, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater announced Wednesday.

That's on top of the 12 million accounts worth $1 billion being held by the state agency.
