The St. Petersburg City Council has approved a plan to spend $1.3 million for renovations to Tropicana Field.
Monday's 7-0 vote paves the way for a project that features the creation of open-air concessions where a restaurant now exists. It also includes walkways behind the outfield seating area.
Tampa Bay Rays officials have characterized the project as a major upgrade for fans.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that team officials had asked the city for the money, which comes from ticket sales and naming rights. The city controls the account, which currently has about $2.1 million in it.
Bathroom overhauls, better lighting and improvements required under the Americans with Disabilities Act, are also part of the project. The work is expected to be complete before next year's baseball season.
