Two fatally shot, third injured at Melbourne home

MELBOURNE, Fla.
Police said a man and a woman were found shot to death and a second woman was injured at a Melbourne apartment complex late Friday afternoon.

Police were called to the League Apartments at 1635 League Ave. just before 5 p.m. Officers found a woman with gunshot wounds in the parking lot and a dead man and woman inside apartment #12. The injured woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Investigators said the deceased man and woman may have been in a relationship with each other and are trying to figure out if this incident was a murder-suicide.

The woman who survived the shooting tried to save her sister, said Alena Lakes, a friend of the victim who she identified as Jessica Cahoon.

Cahoon's sister is recovering and explained what happened to friends and family. Lakes said Cahoon's ex-boyfriend may have picked the lock to her apartment and was waiting inside.

"She didn't deserve this. She had a lot going for her," said Lakes, who said Cahoon knew she was in an abusive relationship.

Cahoon kicked out her boyfriend of 5 years a few weeks ago, but since then he's threatened to kill himself and her, said Lakes.

"She was going to get a restraining order sometime," said Lakes."He just caught up to her before she could."

Lakes often talked to Cahoon about the abuse and warned her to call police. Lakes described Cahoon's ex-boyfriend as controlling and determined. In fact, she said he picked the lock and hid in the closet just last week.

Lakes said Cahoon's sister had just moved in a few doors down and was also shot trying to help her sister.

"She would have heard whatever was going on," said Lakes. "She was banging on the door saying let me in let me in and then people heard two bangs."

Lakes said the ex-boyfriend who police have not named worked as a security guard and people knew he owned a gun.
