ORLANDO, Fla. – A 20-year-old man accused in a carjacking during a UCF football game Saturday evening was arrested by campus police.
Karl Stanborough, 20, of Jupiter, was captured within 34 minutes of the carjacking, which occurred in a parking lot across the street from Bright House Networks Stadium, UCF police said.
Police said Stanborough went up to the driver of a car in the parking lot and punched him in the face to take his car. He then drove briefly on North Orion Boulevard before leaving the car and running into the woods, also across the street from the stadium, police said. Stanborough is not a UCF student.
The incident happened about 9 p.m. Saturday during the second quarter of UCF's game against Southern Mississippi. Stanborough was captured during halftime.
Stanborough, however, told Local 6's Evan Lambert that he didn't have anything to do with either crime.
"They honestly picked the wrong guy. Wrong place, wrong time," Stanborough said.
The victim, Rodolfo Jaramillo, an employee of Sentry Services, a UCF gameday contractor that staffs the parking lots, was transported to Winter Park Memorial Hospital. He was later released and only suffered from minor injuries.
Stanborough was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center to be treated after being bitten by a K-9.
Initial reports claimed Stanborough may have hit some pedestrians, but that turned out not to be true.
UCF police officers, Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies, UCF and Orange County K-9s, the Sheriff's Office helicopter and Florida Highway Patrol troopers helped catch Stanborough.
A UCF student reported a car break-in on campus Saturday night as well, but UCF police haven't been able to determine if the crimes are connected.
