UCF working on alert systems after tornado warnings

Campus officials say Sunday tornado alerts meant for Volusia campus students only

ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF students on the Orange County campus received several tornado warning alerts to their phones Sunday that were meant for students at a regional branch.

The alerts read, "Tornado warning for UCF main campus! Seek shelter immediately in the nearest building, away from doors and windows."

Turns out, those tornado warning alerts were meant for the UCF students on Volusia County's campus.

Patrick Dermody is one of 70,000 students and staff signed up for UCF's alert system.

While he received four alerts yesterday, he told Local 6 it would be better to alert people than not get the alerts at all.

A UCF spokesperson says it is a flaw in the vendor's system and they are working on fixing it.

In the meantime, UCF will be sending alerts out manually when needed. Their emergency management office is staffed 24 hours a day, UCF officials said.
