Use of force documents reveal lies, blame game in OPD officer hit-and-run

Edward Kelty blames others in vehicle for hit-and-run

ORLANDO, Fla. – Documents released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement details how the driver who allegedly hit an Orlando police officer with his car during a traffic stop tried to frame his friends.

The documents were part of the state's investigation of the officer's use of force. He fired three times on the people inside the car before falling to the ground.

Dashcam video shows Officer William Anderson attempt to pull over a car he saw speeding. Anderson demanded the driver to get out of the car. Instead, the front seat passenger jumped out and ran, and the driver floored the gas, running over the officer.

Edward Kelty told detectives from a hospital emergency room that he was sitting in the front passenger seat, wasn't driving, and didn't run. He told them he heard the officer yell "freeze" and "stop." However, the dashcam video clearly shows the front seat passenger running from the car.

Kelty was caught, but the lies continued. During the interview, Kelty's heart rate jumped several times, forcing them to take breaks.

In a second interview hours later, Kelty blamed the other two men inside, Angel Nieves and Alfonza Singleton. He doubled down that he was in the front passenger seat.

Dashcam shows that as Anderson was hit, he fired three rounds into the car. Kelty was shot in his right arm and shoulder.

That proved to be the smoking gun. Kelty told detectives he could only remember shots coming from the center of the windshield. Officers asked him how he was shot on the right side if he was in the passenger seat.

Kelty then stopped answering questions.

Detectives proved that Kelty was the driver. He is now in jail awaiting trial.

Anderson is still suffering from traumatic brain injuries related to the incident.
