DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A fisherman found the body of a 24-year-old Canadian tourist who was vanished while swimming Monday off the Volusia Coast, officials said.
Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris said a deputy from New York, who was fishing with his son, found the body Tuesday morning off Ormond-by-the-Sea, which is 11 miles north of the spot where the Canadian man went missing.
The tourist was identified as Russell Cates, of Ontario, Canada.
Cates, whose family lives in Central Florida, was visiting Daytona Beahc with some friends, officials said. Cates was swimming near their hotel and went underwater, officials said.
Authorities used a helicopter and personal watercraft to search for Cates but didn't find him. The fisherman then notified authorities about his discovery.
Cates was not swimming near a lifeguard, and that there was rough surf Monday, beach officials said.
