ORANGE CITY, Fla. – An Orange City charter school has shut its doors without warning on Friday, just before students were set to start class on Monday.
Reading Star Academy, a K-5 charter school in Orange City, will not open for students on Monday after they didn't meet fiscal or academic performance requirements, earning an "F" last year.
The school board issued a notice in April, citing Reading Star Academy with 21 violations, according to a relase. The charter school then requested a hearing, which was set for September 24, but decided to terminate the contract and close the school on Friday, stating it was "in the best interest of the students."
Parents told Local 6 they came to the school on Friday for an open house.
"I'm concerned that maybe the records aren't going to be preserved that way that they should be and that I'm going to have to repeat a grade or have him tested," said parent Georgia Lantzy. "Hopefully everything is preserved and it was just an issue of the board saying this is too much, the school was too far gone."
The records show 58 students were enrolled for the 2012-13 school year. According to Volusia County schools, district personnel will notify parents of the closure and give out new school assignments. Students will put in their zoned schools, assigned based on the student's home address.
A meeting with the school board is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at the DeLand administrative complex so parents can have their questions answered.
