WINTER PARK, Fla. - Just weeks after a commercial aired during the Super Bowl touting him as a national hero, Winter Park's Lt. Chuck Nadd is turning his attention to the tragic death of Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Pine.
Investigators say Pine was shot and killed by late Monday night by a man suspected of breaking into cars.
"What I wanted to do was really help Central Florida rally around a true hero," Nadd told Local 6 in a Skype interview.
Nadd talked about the website he set up, DeputyPine.com. That website memorializes the fallen deputy and links to a fundraiser for Pine's family.
"I had a parade couple weeks ago, but ultimately the true heroes are the ones who give it all, who really make great sacrifices," Nadd said. "I wanted to make sure that wasn't lost."
Pine is also being remembered in his home of Louisiana.
"After high school, people go their own ways, but I was always fortunate enough to stay in touch with him," said Macc Neimann, who had been friends with Pine since childhood.
Even the distance can't stop him now from thinking of Pine's wife and three kids.
"I think they're going to be just fine," he said. "His faith has put him in a better place than we are, in my opinion."
Funeral services are planned for Saturday at First Baptist Church in Orlando. The memorial service will take place at 2 p.m.
