Witness: Officer accidentally shoots self

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – An officer was shot at a Brevard County apartment complex on Saturday afternoon, according to Melbourne police.

It happened at The Villas on East University Boulevard as the officer was investigating a burglary.

Debbie Vanderploeg lives three doors down from the apartment that was burglarized and told Local 6 the officer accidentally shot himself in the foot as he was arresting the suspects.

Vanderploeg said she heard one single gunshot.

Tamala Sanders, who lives in the apartment that was burglarized, said two teens broke in while she was out getting her hair done.

The burglars cleaned out her son's bedroom, taking his Xbox, headphones and other electronics.

Another neighbor saw what was happening and called 911.

Sanders said police arrested the suspects, who were hiding in a shed close to her apartment.

The condition of the injured officer is unknown at this time.
