Woman, 88, poked pregnant woman in stomach with cane, Flagler deputies say
Nayade Romeo, of Palm Coast, arrested on aggravated battery charges
An 88-year-old Central Florida woman was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of poking an 8-months-pregnant woman in her stomach with a cane during an argument.
Nayade Romeo, of Palm Coast, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Romeo got into an argument with her neighbors, Scott and Melinda Smith, over their children's sweat shirts being on her lawn.
Deputies said Romeo poked Scott in the stomach with her cane and did the same thing to his pregnant wife Melinda, who had tried to separate the two.
Romeo doesn't deny raising her cane, but says it was to protect herself.
She says she never hit anyone because her neighbor Melinda grabbed it from her.
"She was swining it up, north and south and east and west," she said.
Romeo's husband came out minutes after the incident and took his wife inside their home, deputies said.
Romeo told deputies that she wanted to file charges against the couple for trespassing.
The couple said they wanted to pursue charges against Romeo, who was taken into custody and transported to the Flagler County jail.
