ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A woman previously accused of trying to kill her children in a high-speed chase in Osceola County was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing a tow truck in Volusia County.
Angela Estrella, 37, was arrested on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle.
"I thought she was playin'," a flabbergasted man said after watching a woman drive away in his tow truck on Interstate 95.
The driver had responded to help the woman when her rental car broke down, deputies said.
The woman asked if she could take his yellow flatbed truck to New York and the driver, thinking she was joking, said "sure," according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. The driver then followed up with a serious,"no," but when he turned his back, Estrella jumped into the driver's seat and sped away northbound, said deputies.
The wrecker company tracked the vehicle's GPS, and Estrella was found at a gas station in Palm Coast and she was arrested.
Estrella was booked into the Flagler County Detention Facility and was later transferred to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
In August of 2012, Estrella crashed into several vehicles in Kissimmee after being clocked at 112 mph while, according to troopers, she intentionally tried to kill her children and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, who opened fire on her.
Court records show Estrella had recently planned to argue insanity for the Osceola attempted murder incident, which is still awaiting trial. Earlier this month, a judge allowed her to be released from GPS monitoring and gave her permission to travel to New York.
